“Are We Shifting LinkedIn Posts and Content Away from Their Purpose and Losing Their Professional Edge?”

A Discussion on Maintaining the Right Balance Between Professionalism & Personal Content.

Hey all,

It’s been a long time since I shared a post! This one was there in my drafts for a while, and I finally wanted to post it today! This post is solely about my thoughts on LinkedIn posts, content, and chats we as users engage with.

It has been nearly 3 years since I joined LinkedIn, and I’ve truly felt efficient during my time here. I love how this platform connects professionals, helps people grow in their careers, and provides a space to share knowledge, insights, and achievements.

Content/Posts That Excite Me About LinkedIn!

I think one of the best things about LinkedIn is the valuable content people share. I have learned so much from posts about:

✅ Creative employee appreciation methods

✅ Recognitions like R&R, awards, and promotions in a unique way

✅ Companies introducing great initiatives like menstrual leave policies

✅ Inspirational career journeys and successful stories of individuals and organizations

✅ Job opportunities and hiring updates

✅ Industry trends, insightful discussions, articles and inspirational career blogs

These posts add immense value to our professional lives, inspire us, and help us stay updated with industry trends.

How Individuals & Organizations Can Use LinkedIn Effectively

Any Individual or Organizations can build a strong professional brand by sharing:

✔️ Company newsletters

✔️ Growth journeys and achievements 🎉

✔️ Event highlights and project showcases

✔️ Milestones and success stories 🏆

✔️ Upcoming job opportunities

✔️ Moments from workplace celebrations

These kinds of posts inspire, educate, and help people understand a company’s culture, vision, and contributions, making LinkedIn a powerful tool for branding and engagement.

Are We Posting the Right Content?

I’ve noticed a shift in the type of content shared by users on LinkedIn compared to my earlier experience on this platform. While some users use it wisely, others post content that feels more suited for personal social media platforms like Instagram or Facebook.

❌ Do we really need to post personal post or wishes (like for example, wedding ceremony wishes for employees) on LinkedIn?

❌ Should personal outings and celebrations be published on a professional platform?

❌ Are random reels/memes adding value in the name of fun, which is not really fun, or are they just noise?

Many professionals, especially those who are serious about their career growth, prefer LinkedIn to stay professional and valuable rather than turning into another casual social media platform.

I understand that some companies do this to create a friendly and engaging brand image, but couldn't we focus more on a more professional way of doing that?

If we really want to have a memory gallery with our employees, colleagues, or team members, instead of sharing personal events publicly, we could:

✔️ Have an internal shared folder for team outings, birthdays, and celebrations, where memories can be revisited within the organization while ensuring people’s privacy is respected.

✔️ Create a private group for informal interactions or sharing such post

This way, we can maintain professionalism on LinkedIn while still keeping a positive workplace culture.

If an individual or a company posts personal celebrations once in a while, it’s fine. But if it becomes a regular thing, it shifts the focus away from professional content, and that’s where I worry that the purpose of this platform is being lost.

       Respecting Privacy Matters

Another important aspect I like to share is Privacy consideration. Before posting any photos or videos that include employees, any responsible individual or an organizations should ensure they have consent from the people involved.

I know many may not agree with this, but I personally had an experience where my picture and video taken during some event were shared on a social media page without my knowledge. Though the post contained many other photos, and mine was just one or two among them, and it may have been a normal post for them, it created a personal impact on my life that the one who posted could not understand my perspective.

This experience made me realize that how important it is to respect people’s privacy on social media.

LinkedIn Messages – A Growing Concern

Another thing that concerns me is inappropriate messages on LinkedIn.

This is a professional networking platform, but some people misuse it by sending irrelevant, unprofessional, or even inappropriate messages under the guise of job-related discussions.

I’m not the only one who has faced this. Many professionals have shared similar experiences. While this issue exists across social media, it’s disappointing to see it happening here as well.

Let Me Wrap It Up Here!

At the end of the day, what we post is a personal choice, but we could be mindful of:

✔️ The platform’s purpose

✔️ The privacy and consent of individuals involved

✔️ The value it provides to the professional community

And, I'm happy to welcome any thoughts or opinions about my post.

Feel free to share them in the comments!

Thank you!
